Hello all,

I have 'volunteered' to run a curriculum extension activity which I have called on paper 'Fun and Games with Google Earth'.

Anybody got any ideas what the fun and games could be?

All the students have access to Google Earth and the dept and 3 or 4 Geko GPS units.

I was planning some 'Where in the World?' type games, some on-site orienteering with the GPS units and some 'drawing' with GPS.

Any other ideas? I will of course post/blog about the finished ideas/sessions.

Thanks in advance

Rich

It's nothing to do with Google Earth, but watching kids attempting to play the games (eg Smack the Geko) on the GPS is hilarious! You'll need a very big space though...

How about using a live gps tracking service to track an escaping student? You need a phone + gps that runs 3d tracker. I did this once and wrote it up somewhere but can't remember where.

Or an activity with SketchUp?

littlemiss - how much space do you need for the games? Football pitch? Tennis court?

Noel - I like the live tracking idea, I'll have a think about it. SketchUp would be stepping on the toes of the IT dept a little too early in the term.

Anymore ideas.

You can set the playing area to large, medium or small as I recall. I've always done it with "small" but with students down the field they were still managing to bump into trees. Football pitch should be ok, but have a go yourself before you get them to do it!

Don't worry about other departments with SketchUp
How about doing some Earth Art using BigHugeLabs to make posters.
Treasure Hunt game.
Hide and Seek ?

Plenty of ideas here of course: http://googlearthusersguide.blogspot.com/

Thanks - I was just trying to reduce the chance of me being seen by the school running into the mesh around the sports area while looking down at my GPS.

Thanks for the Earth Art idea Alan, I'd forgot about that one!

I'm not going to do the SketchUp thing as I team up with the ICT dept later in the year to do a 'Hazard Proof' house thing.

First session on Monday - so I think it maybe a GE Treasure Hunt and some Earth Art. GPS fun the week after.

Anybody have a GE Treasure Hunt?

I have created a Google Earth Treasure Hunt type excercise.

Details and downloads from my blog - geogalot.

Hope people find it useful.

Apologies to anybody who has already downloaded this but there were a couple of typos and mistakes - all sorted now! My fault for sharing early before my keen year 8s had given it the once over!
