Hi The sln community I believe, has been the backbone of the GGIP campaign for sometime now. I hope as a committee member the GGIP can call on your support for a new venture that can really prove the power of sln and Give Geography Its Place. The GGIP aims this year to target Geography in our Primary Schools. The plan is to create using slners a Geography “super scheme” to enhance Geography Teaching in our primary schools and Give Geography Its Place. The scheme will focus on Year 6 and possibly Key Stage 2/3 transition. The scheme and resources (powerpoints, worksheets, photographs and movies etc.) will be available for all to download for free from the GGIP website and the contributors will be acknowledged. We also plan publicity around the launch of the resource. This thread will become a consultation of what the topic (if any) the scheme should focus on, The consultation period will end on May 11th, and the creation of resources etc. will begin. This resource will innovate and inspire! This forum has so many creative ideas lets share them! What we need from slners…. Littlemiss and I (and anyone who shows a positive interest to be involved) will put this all together. Any questions email in profile. Give Geography its Place, Adam [This message has been edited by add (edited 02 May 2007).] IP: Logged |

Yes... this has potential to be a fantastic resource, and to really help to spread the GGiP message further. As Adam says, all comments, suggestions, creative ideas, offers of help/resources, etc. very welcome!! Give Geography its Place! IP: Logged |

I am definititely interested in this, especially as one of my aims for next Autumn is to produce and then trial a KS2-3 transition unit in a few local schools. In answer to your questions: 1. Many Y6 staff cover "The mountain environment" and "What's in the news?" as these are the QCA unit for Y6. However, I like the idea of something "environmental" or "fair-trade" linked, to work as a transition unit. Chocolate immediately springs to mind! 2. Yes, but depends upon your timescale? I cannot commit any time to this until July onwards, as am also involved with a secondary GAP unit on Food Miles. 3. I will pass this onto a Y6 teacher who I think might be interested. 4. yes please, updates would be great I really like this idea. It practical, productive and fills a real need. It might even encourage some more primary liaison between secondary geography depts and their feeder schools, which would be fantastic. IP: Logged |

This would be a superb resource! Have taught year 6 for the first time ever this year and was confronted with the instruction - well those are the videos we've got......what do you fancy? They have never had a geography specialist so were a bit clueless. Mountain environments and coasts seem to be popular at year 6 - although I've just had a wonderful term spent on Mexico. Have only this year's experience at this level so don't really feel I can offer much in the way of resources or advice but if I can help in practical way - please let me know. My head is very anxious to promote a whole school ethos (we are secondary and junior on two different sites) and would really like me to organise geography throughout the school. So am interested in ideas about KS2/3 transition. Keep up the great work! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the comments and great to see such a positive response already! Would we be better looking at a topic area that is already popular (and therefore presumably pretty well taught!) - or looking at something new? Or should we be going for something more general, rather than a scheme of work on a specific topic? IP: Logged |

Will pass something on over the weekend as this is an area I am keen to develop further. I do have a Primary page on the website with various links which might be useful. http://www.geographypages.co.uk/key12.htm IP: Logged |

What a positive initiative. Seriously bad timing for me to get involved (lots of stuff going on personally) but if anyone wants a proof reader etc or ideas then I will try to help. Chocolate would be a very good transition. I have something somewhere on world meals, can't find it at the moment but when I do I'll forward it to Adam... IP: Logged |

When Dan and I stood aside from running GGIP full-time, we wanted to develop some positive initiatives since we had spent nearly 9 months nagging people and moaning. I think this is a great way to promote Geography and GGIP and it is something we are quite capable of doing as a grassroots Geography community. I know now is a really busy time for everyone ( I haven't seen our staffroom so stressed for a while as this week)BUT this is a medium term project and if lots of people contribute a little, then we can get it moving forward. As I said above, it is all about seeing if we can work as a community. All work/contributions will be credited. At the moment, it is good to just get positive reactions and as many ideas as possible. Adam will co-ordinate and Victoria ( Thanks to those that have chipped in so far. IP: Logged |

I will do some video work to support this over the summer. Once there is a theme, focus for the resource just let me know what I can do. Just as a thought. Could the focus of the pack be 'G'... this is Year 6. G is for.. like the title of this posting, but doing some simple research into the letter 'G' in respective communities? Thanks for those people who have emailed me and willing to do their bit. I visited a primary school today to try and work out what they need. I would love to be in contact with any keen primary geographers...if you know of anyone please contact me. There are two issues here: We want your support. Adam IP: Logged |

Great letter Add - saved me a bit of work this evening!! Will be going to as many Derbyshire primary schools as I can manage tomorrow! Thanks for the comments Kate - I think we were mindful of the fact that there are some good resources out there for primary geography, and were keen to acknowledge that there is some excellent primary geography going on - but also that much more could be done. What we were hoping to create was something that would be free, would foster links between primary and secondary geography (with potential for supporting primary geographers in the future, and developing cross-phase work), and that would enhance geography and promote GGiP. Come on everyone - get Add's letter printed and sent out to as many primary schools as you can... IP: Logged |

I have worked with Cheshire Primaries for 3 years, on transition especially. An Alladins lamp approach is ok- if you mean it, but 2 notes of constructive caution;- Don't get frustrated by a minimal responce colleagues are up to here with SATS at the moment, they my need longer to reflect on what they want from geography. Don't impose or dictate to them, its a partnership remember. If i can help, ask. IP: Logged |

what a fantastic idea. Have been shocked by the death of primary school geography that has happened over recent years. Have also been asked to teach some primary geography as part of the transition program with our feeder schools, so all ideas will be appreciated! IP: Logged |

Thank you Kate for alerting me to this discussion. I think this could be excellent. It would be good to see some of the creative strategies that are being developed in the best secondary classrooms shared with primary teachers. Just a plea for a little sensitivity around how this is done - though I know from previous posts that you are asking for contributions from primary colleagues. I had a few thoughts as I stood in the shower this morning (probably not too good for my global footprint but quite good for getting my brain cells working). There are aspects of geography, for example, making difficult and frightening concepts like `climate change’ accessible to year 6, that could be fruitfully developed. An advert in a Guardian weekend magazine: `Leave a smaller footprint on holiday’ – Discover Devon - made me think of a possible route that involved using adverts/ headlines from newspapers. Another one could be linked to a book called `Going to School in India’ – where children from very diverse and different places in India make the sometimes very difficult journey to get to school – why are they prepared to go to all this effort? Would our Y6 class be prepared to walk XXX miles? The advantage of this book over the far more limited locality study of Chembakolli is that children are introduced to India as a vast & diverse country. There is a very sound basis for developing citizenship and for an introduction to simple aspects of economic geography. How do these kinds of proposals sound? I think primary teachers are looking for new direction and not simply a re-hashing of the QCA units. [This message has been edited by wendyn (edited 04 May 2007).] IP: Logged |

No-one is imposing or dictating Stephen and yes, you can help. When you get the time, get a copy of the letter to all the primary schools that you have contact with in Cheshire. As a transition expert, it would be good to hear a few ideas on structure, content, etc. Benchmarrow - use your experience with Year 5 to throw in some ideas. There is nothing sacrosanct about the proposed pack - the idea is just to try and boost Geography in the final years of Primary and try and offer support to Primary teachers many of whom have no Geography background. This is going to be a flexible resource! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the comments Wendy - really useful. It opens up the discussion so that people can start thinking in different and imaginative directions. I think it is a difficult thing to do successfully without some primary input. Keep thinking in the shower! More ideas welcome. IP: Logged |

Oh... I have been inspired by the amount of Primary teachers who I have already have contact with. The GGIP have not and will not dictate to them (whoever they are). The aim is to promote Geography at any level, in this case Primary and I see no evidence that we are not working in a partnership? If anything stronger primary and secondary links may well benefit all. People are giving up their time to make a difference for Geography. I admire them for that. IP: Logged |

Wendy Hardman, who wrote the article on Transition, would be a primary teacher worth involving in this project. We will e-mail people who are registered for the Primary Geography Quality Mark. Wendy was a Gold award winner in the pilot year of the PGQM. Have you looked at the most recent editions of primary Geographer? There are often articles worth reading that show how primary teachers are trying to deliver thoughtful and creative approaches to geography. Also see the article by Fran Martin linked to personal/ everyday geography. [This message has been edited by wendyn (edited 07 May 2007).] IP: Logged |

I just saw this thread and as a Geography co-ordinator at a junior school, it made me extremely excited. I think a focus on Primary Geography and developing links with secondary schools are excellent ideas, especially considering what a bashing KS1-2 geography has tended to receive in the annual Ofsted reports! Are there any particular areas of geographic skills or understanding that secondary teachers are finding missing when pupils begin in Yr 7, which might be useful to teach in Yr 6? I agree with the previous comments, about the desire to move in a new direction away from the QCA units and some of the commercial packs (although they have provided a sound starting point for many teachers that might not have been confident in developing their own scheme of work). Some schools have been teaching about Chembokoli/ St Lucia/ Godstone for quite some time and I've seen the teacher's boredom with the topic being passed on to their pupils. So it would be great to develop something fresh that would inspire teachers AND pupils! I think this is especially true, considering the recent change in the Primary Strategy and focus on developing a 'richer' curriculm, with meaningful links with other subjects. Also, if it was something that teachers found exciting and inspiring, then it might mean that Yr 6 teachers might be more inclined to make some space for it in their busy, SATs driven timetable. The ideas about ecological footprints sound really interesting and should motivate learners because it really involves them. It could be used to devlop enquiry skills (which sometimes get overlooked in the geography primary curriculum because non-specialists aren't always sure in how to facilitate them successfully) and at the end of the topic chn could communicate their findings (e.g. school news report, display, in assembly etc)which would give it a purpose. I think that something related to sustainable development would definately be worth considering as it is an exciting area that some schools still haven't developed yet but is becoming increasingly important in today's climate. When deciding what to base the scheme on, it might be worth bearing in mind David Bell's quote (HM Chief Inspector of Schools, Ofsted, in ‘The value and importance of geography’, Primary Geographer): 'There is a need to ensure that geography is a subject which reflects the changing landscape and issues of the twenty-first century. Geography should have a leading role to play in preparing young people to face their responsibilities and develop a critical understanding of the rapidly changing world in which they live.' I also thought the chocolate 'Bean to bar' / fairtrade idea could be succesful - I recently taught a short unit on this to my Year 5 class and they LOVED it (might have had something to do with getting to try some fairtrade chocolate though!!). This topic, as mentioned previously, also has some excellent resources (such as video clips, raps, activity ideas) related to it on the Comic Relief site that I think primary teachers would find useful. Another idea which some primary co-ordinators might find helpful, could be the opportunity to go and visit a secondary school, watching a geography specialsit teach and discussing transition, considering that MANY primary geography co-ordinators aren't specialists themselves and some have only ended up in the role because it came with something else! Anyway, I'll stop wittering on - I think this is a great idea, I look forward to what will come of this, and I'll be more than happy if I could help out in any way! IP: Logged |

Excellent contribution to this thread Jenny. It is exactly what we were hoping for. There has to be lots more scope for Geography specialists providing some kind of support to their primary colleagues - and it is long overdue in my opinion. Keep the comments coming. Adam no doubt is keeping a careful record of all contributions IP: Logged |

Thank you to Wendy North for introducing me. I am very interested in this area and believe that the partnership between KS2/ KS3 is generally not handled consistently or well. My background - I taught Geography in high schools for some years before a career break. I have been teaching in a Primary school for 6 years. I am happy to share my experiences etc and would love to listen to others ideas/ opinions. As has been mentioned, this is a busy time of year for us so I may be otherwise occupied for the next few weeks! IP: Logged |
