Just spent today drafting Quality Mark application for our middle school. This thread is very inspiring and many people seem to be thinking of the same issues as me for future units.
Our year 5s examine a local traffic issue, contrasting locality - Bury St Edmunds and St. Lucia. Like others, having tired of 'doing' the geography of St. Lucia, I'm writing a new unit called 'Should I go to St. Lucia?' investigating the island from a new angle, that of sustainable tourism.
Our year 6s visit the local coast and look at processes and issues affecting it (Pontins threatened by erosion), local river (desperately need to revamp or ditch that one - thinking about a unit on water in general), Brazil and rainforests, Geography in the News (currently Asian tsunami - current year 6s can't remember much about it but are enjoying mapping volcanoes and tsunamis at present). May need a new topical issue next year.
Can offer some help though getting involved in some KS3 revision planning soon. The more issues-based my teaching becomes and the less content-based, the more the pupils enjoy it I've discovered.
