one of the officials at the openning game of the World Cup was a geography teacher. So that was to an audience of a Billion at least.
Result!
Also this weeks JetSet winner was a retired geography teacher.
Positive role models in improbable places.

Stephen, you said on the GGiP blogspot that, "as an adviser this is one initiative I'm happy to push on". Which authority do you work for? Are you able to contact all the HODs in your area by a fax or by other means? http://www.passion4geography.co.uk/noticeboard.htm

Hi
Are there any primary teachers out there who might want to go halves on Croydon?
I've started e-mailing the schools whose addresses I can find on the internet but am not allowed to use the office fax machine!

If you haven't had a look this evening, we have had the 500th person sign up AND there is a note on the Noticeboard to say that the TES is interested in writing an article on the GGiP Campaign. Great news all round.

Excellent news about TES - they are due us some positive coverage, I think. It is also amazing and quite rewarding that this should now have become the record thread. Tomorrow I will be sending out 1000 fliers - almost every Scottish teacher of Geography will get one in their SAGT conference mailing. It is a sort of last push up here before folks start 'winding down' for the holidays. In another week it will difficult to raise enthusiasm for anything not connected to the holidays!

My wife just came up with the idea that we could use our own stencil graffiti tag that we could put up 'legally' in a range of different places....

Talking of Holidays .... where's that Barnaby Bear and does he have a t-shirt with the logo on?

Maybe another sideline for the campaign ... where can we get the logo photographed over the holidays? After all it is about place !

Can Karen Mulvey take and photograph the logo in the Antarctic (albeit in December 2007)?

That's an interesting idea Stuart.
The local paper has a feature over the summer where readers take a picture of them reading the Lynn News in unusual places e.g. on a camel in front of the pyramids, scuba diving...
Why not have pictures of the logo from around the world, and make a Google Earth file of the images tagged to the place ?
I'm happy to co-ordinate that...(no pun intended)

I'm happy to do Antarctica but it's a long way off. Many school expeditions are gearing up at the moment and will soon visit the far corners of the earth. We've got a group going to Peru. I know World Challenge run a chat room and if anyone is travelling with them you may be able to post on their web site and ask for help from school groups up and down the country?

Maybe there should be another logo... a mark that can be awarded that says 'Giving Geography its Place'. Websites, music companies, publishers etc. that can proove to us they are promoting geography and using the term effectively can be awarded the mark. An example could be Starbucks...

Another idea linked to this could be a list of organisations that geography related work but are afraid or choose not to celebrate geography.. a start system could be used. The RGS-IBG would get 5* where as the BBC might only get 1*. Lonely Planet, Rough Guides etc. may also be only 1* as while they mention geography, it is only land area etc. on not relevant issues...

What do you think? We would need clear criteria and could encourage organisations to apply.

D.R.E.
I like the idea of positively Biging Up companies/organisations that give geography its rightful place.
Not so sure about name/shame.
Criteria making should not be too hard to write.

Got a big stinking letter printed in the Leicester Mercury last night. I thought they would bin it but it actually got pride of place slap bang in the middle of the page! Bring on the 1000!

I'm liking the sound of teching a lesson somewhere public in one of these massive globes, any more news from the RGS on that?

It actually belongs to Windsor and Maidenhead. They have made good noises but we could only use it inside. The question is where might be a good venue that would get good attention from the public/press?

Nice one on the paper! Nationals often pick up from locals...

On a much more trivial note - I managed to do my bit (but it was in August 2004). I appeared in OK magazine in a picture with the Brazilian ambassador and the caption said "Geography teacher.."!

Just had a reply to a friend at World Challenge (an ex-geography teacher). He reckons he can get the logo to some pretty spectacular places. Which would be very cool!

Would it be possible to have the logo available in a form that enables it to be reproduced in a large format eg. at full A4 size, without blurring? The current logos are fine if they are kept small, but they don't enlarge well, particularly the words.
This would enable lamination of a full sized logo into identical "Mouse-Mats"(in portrait?). They would then be robust enough to slip into a rucksack, travel the world and be photographed in all sorts of wild and exotic places (plus ordinary places not quite so wild!), and could double up as a placemat perhaps with all the host's travel/emergency contact details/numbers etc on the back, so it becomes multi-purpose and completely indispensable!
Barnaby Bear and Flat Stanley could have some competition this summer!

Does the BBC show its knowledge, skills and understanding in studies of a wide range of places and environments at the full range of scales, from local to global, and in different parts of the world? Do they explain complex interactions within and between physical and human processes? Do they refer to a wide range of geographical factors to explain and predict change in the characteristics of places over time?Do they understand alternative approaches to development and the implications of these for the quality of life in different places?Do they assess the relative merits of different ways of tackling environmental issues and justify their views about these different approaches? Do they understand how considerations of sustainable development can affect their own lives as well as the planning and management of environments and resources? Do they illustrate this with a full range of examples? Do they draw selectively on geographical ideas and theories, and use accurately a wide range of appropriate skills and sources of evidence from the key stage 3 programme of study? Do they carry out geographical investigations independently at different scales? Do they evaluate critically sources of evidence and present coherent arguments and effective, accurate and well-substantiated conclusions?Do they evaluate their work by suggesting improvements in approach and further lines of enquiry?
(adapted from Attainment target for geography level descriptor for Exceptional Performance)

Do they? YES (mostly)
Do they call it what it is?

COME ON EVERYONE, how very good it would be to reach the magic number of names on the petition during or by the end of Geography Awareness Week 26th - 30th June.....
A few more volunteers to target a selected authority by sending 10-20 faxes to schools in the area could make all the difference! Herts, Beds, Cheshire, Suffolk, Worcs, London boroughs, Birmingham et al ....where are you? http://www.passion4geography.co.uk/noticeboard.htm

Noel, thanks for working on a larger version of the logo - I'm really keen to print one out so I can make a T-shirt for when the local newspaper come in. I think I might even make one for my teaching assisstant if it comes out really well!

To get the image on your phone, copy it to your PC and then use your sync software to get in your PC. I haven't tried downloading it directly, though it's obviously only possible if your phone has a web browser.

I have finished a logo for the quality mark that Dan suggested. It's different to the hand design. In terms of a T shirt logo - that will have to wait a bit longer bcause I'm quite busy and unfortunately suffering from mild RSI of my mouse finger. I'll try and do it this week.

Let's bring this thread to the top again.
If you are reading this, have you looked at the petition at www.passion4geography.co.uk ? If not, please do!
If you have already signed at the site, have you contacted made contact with any other geography departments in your authority by sending the ready-made fax available from the same site?
It can make a difference, as you will see if you go to the summary of names by area at: http://www.passion4geography.co.uk/regionaldata.htm Bucks is at the top simply because of a few e-mails and faxes...half an hours work at most.
If just 20-30 people did the same thing, we'd be at the nominal finish post of 1000 names within no time.
Secondary done, I am targeting some primary geography co-ordinators next week....

David R got this in the TES last week (page 5) and it was in one of my locals... the Henley Standard too. BAFTA have said they will revue the factual award to possibly include the word 'geography' as well as the normal bunch.

Right - T shirt logo is available from the logo page, just in time for the summer.

I've completely redrawn the logo as a vector diagram and the files are available in TIFF JPG and PNG to suit your shirt vendor of choice. I have also included the original file - if you have Fireworks you should be able to resize and edit it yourself with no loss of quality.

There's no text - I recommend a simple Geography Teacher type statement.

Let me know how you all get on!

Noel
