I'm glad Stuart raised the issue of the slogan. I was getting a bit confused about why the PGiiP was attributed to me as I thought the concensus had been to agree on 'Give Geography its Place'. (page 1 of this thread)

Sorry I might have been a bit confused - do people want the logo changed?

I must say I thought the same as Stuart and Geodave too, although I do like the hand logo.

On the G word theme...some dinner companions last night (medics, you might have guessed!) thought that asking the media to 'Find the G spot' was an alternative!!

We need a quick decision people! I have tried out the 'Give Geography its Place' - you can see it by logging on to the website.

Noel/Val - since you have a vested interest in this - just tell me what you think. I can quickly and easily change the webpages to the GGiP or restore them to the PGiiP slogan. Personally, I prefer GGiP....

If we go for the adapted slogan then a few people who have added logos to their websites would need to change the logos. If Noel doesn't have time to re-do his logo page, then people can copy the one from passion4geography in the short term.

Let me know, I'm ready and waiting.

I won't be posting any more for a while but people can contact me by e-mail. When the number of people signing up to the media campaign reaches 1000, I will do my 1000th post!

GeoDave

GeoDave, please adapt your final post for a response to this.

I'm keen to start campaigning, but I'm holding back for the moment until the finer details are settled.

I'm also I'm keen to start contacting people. Can we have though maybe a blog linked to the site, which can be updated by all, telling us who they have contacted in the media/public eye, what they said and the responses they have had, both positive and negative?

I think this will put less pressure on yourself, and provide a good resource for all.

Well done to GeoDave and Noel who have invested a huge amount of time and effort so far in providing the means to get this campaign going!

Now I do not wish to sound like I'm lecturing the rest of you but seriously, have you sent off some emails yet? The campaign cannot 'take off' exponentially by itself. Until this camapign gets some media coverage, the only way to spread the word is by email. The number of petitioners from Scotland are the result of just a very few minutes of trawling my address book the other night and are proof that this kind of effort produces results.

I am now away to 'swot' (as I hope the rest of you will be too!) for the 'Know your Planet' Test the Nation quiz tomorrow evening ... a geographer must win this! What an opportunity that would be to get the 'Give Geography its Place' campaign aired on TV.

I've been delighted by this campaign, and thank Daniel for getting mad enough to kick it off. I very much like Tony's idea for a blog of all the people contacted, and their reactions. I will certainly have a go at my local MP, but its challenging the mind-set of the media that might bring the real breakthrough.

Just an (after)thought ... at the bottom of the campaign page, just to add a touch of menace ..

Geography - we know where you live!

I'll logo-up my site as soon as I get the FTP working again!

Caused a spot of mischeif and hammered out a mammouth amount of emails today. Every Geography teacher I know, all the Geography staff at Leicester and Plymouth University, local newspaper and MP also got the message!

Hopefully the pace will pick up and we'll hit that thousand mark sooner than expected.

Like Val and many others I have also sent off a number of e-mails today ..... maybe any of you that are working for the exam boards in the coming weeks might like to raise the profile of the campaign too at the examiners meetings.

This really seems to have got people fired up .... and on a Saturday in half term too.

Nice idea, I was going to make up some little business cards, with the logo and address, and Andrew's line on the back, to distribute randomly to geographers I meet.

But then again I'm like that, perhaps I'll leave some in call boxes as well.

(Sorry if this upsets the puritans)

What a fab idea, I am always ranting at classes to watch the Geography programmes on the TV. I have just returned from an activities week with S1 in which I managed to mention geography into just about every activity from windsufing and canoeing to hillwalking (easy -we were in the cairngorms!) and even free time (well they did want the tv on). The physics teacher only managed to enthuse about archery.

It has occured to me that perhaps the media are to frightened to label anything geography as they then would have to call a huge chunk (maybe around 25%) of their programmes (and certainly some of their most popular ones) geography programmes.

Good luck with it, and i'm on the way to letting more geographers know about this!

Suggest a panellist for Question Time
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/question_time/3255942.stm

I've already suggested David Lambert and gave my reasons (Sorry David), let's see if we can get David and Geography mentioned, at least on the site!

Here's another campaign running at the moment... http://www.swansea-res.org.uk/tv_advert.html
Perhaps we should have a brief downloadable movie with the logo and message ?

I've emailed:

- geographers I know
- local MP's
- all the suggested BBC sites, including Question Time for David L
- my local papers to offer to check for programmes of a geographical nature

I note that Lucy Siegle at the Observer is on Test the Nation and so perhaps we could target her... lucy.siegle@observer.co.uk

A good idea is being discussed on the blog this evening. 'Teach the media a lesson'....geography teachers all over the country invite the local/national press into their classrooms and teach them a geography lesson. Simple but very effective, I'd say.

Note to website owners re logos.

I used .png files because these offer the best ratio of file size to quality, and offer transparency to avoid messing up pages without a white background.

Discussion on the other forum suggested that website owners were finding it difficult to copy the transparent logos. I've added download links for Internet Explorer users. I think the problem won't have been apparent to Firefox people.

Please let me know if I can help with other website issues, or if you would like the logo resized or in a different file type.

Remember to use the png transparency script if you do use a transparent logo. View the pages' source code and copy all the javascript in the header that starts with the line: <!--[if lt IE 7]>

I have just noticed on the GGiiP website that we have notched up our 250th supporter. That means we are one quarter of the way towards the point at which GeoDave will post his 1000th posting!

Keep the momentum going, everyone.

I have also just spotted Nick Middleton (Oxford) on the list. If that is who I think it is (presenter of Channel 4's 'Going to Extremes' programmes), then that is very good news indeed.

I don't know if it is my fault but I emailed Nick at his email address at Oxford. I'm sure if we all do some digging we can find some more!

Not many people signed up for getting naked! We also need to think a way of getting in contcat with lots more people so that we can teach the lessons for the media. Can we agree on a date? Week of the 26th June or week of 3rd July?

I came across the GGTIP site when I did a Google search for positive comments about geography for an artcile I am writing. I sent the url to my geography teacher network and other contacts. At the same time I received the url in an email from another geographer friend who had just come across your site. So word is definitely getting out there. The next Primary Geographer focus is on Primary Geography: New directions in the 21st century. I would like to make reference to your campaign in there if that's okay with you.

Email David's address on the website and he will add you if you are having problems. Your name will not be added automatically as David is doing it manually.

As a suggestion... email your local paper and offer to identify for them when geographical programmes are on TV. They could then add in the (geography) bit.
